How to fill a bath with acrylic: step-by-step instructions for restoration

The acrylic coating prolongs the service life of cast iron baths, which lose their aesthetic appearance over time. Factory paint takes on a yellowish tint, the surface becomes rough, and there comes a time when you have to think about replacement or restoration. Covering the bath with acrylic or using an insert allows you to renew an old product and extend its service life up to 15 years.

Which acrylic to choose for the bathroom

The domestic market offers many products for the restoration of cast iron baths. The most popular are Plastol, Standard and Stakril. These are two-component enamels costing up to 1600 rubles, packaged in 3.5 kg packages (the amount is calculated for a bowl 1.5 m long).

The agent is applied to the walls of the sanitary ware, where it polymerizes and becomes solid. A quality coating is done in 24 hours.

Each enamel manufacturer has its own technology, the secret of which is carefully guarded. Depending on the brand, the product contains a hardener or a liquid for degreasing. It is recommended to purchase funds from trusted manufacturers, whose products are of high quality:

  • Stakril Ecolor;
  • "Plastol";
  • Ekovanna;
  • "YarLi".
ekovanna
Ekovanna brand products have established themselves in the market.

Developers with technical laboratories at their disposal have experience in the production and sale of products. Unscrupulous competitors copy the products of these brands, producing inexpensive enamel that is vaguely similar to the original. Trying to save money, the consumer runs the risk of purchasing a low-quality product.

Acrylic bath liner

Acrylic liner
The acrylic liner is great for cast iron surfaces.

The sanitary bowl is updated with an acrylic liner made of polymer acrylic. This method of restoration has many advantages as the bath does not need to be dismantled and can be restored in a few hours. The liner is affordable, does not absorb dirt, is easy to clean, and does not rust. Thanks to this element, the bowl looks great for the next 10-15 years.

The acrylic liner retains heat, adheres well to the cast iron surface, and works like a glass unit. The liner is mounted quickly, in a couple of hours, and the bath itself becomes usable in 7 - 8 hours.

Restoration with liquid acrylic: the pros and cons of the method

One of the main advantages is the bath's long service life. After updating, it can be used for more than 10 years. Acrylic spreads evenly over the surface of the cast iron product as it is poured rather than applied with a brush. The product fills microscopic cracks, leveling the surface.

The enamel for restoration is harmless to health and does not emit a strong odor. It dries quickly, so the work is done on a tight schedule. But this method of restoration has a drawback. To start using the bath again, you will have to wait 2 days. It is best to keep the bathroom closed during this time. Otherwise, dust particles deposited on the drying acrylic layer will spoil the appearance of the bath.

Most owners prefer white bathtubs, but during the restoration process, tinting can be done by painting the bowl in any other color.

How to cover a bath with acrylic on your own

You can save a little by filling the bath yourself. Before you start, you should soberly assess your own skills. It will be nice if you already have experience in painting work. First you need to prepare the cast iron product, then cast in layers. You need to work carefully, otherwise you will not be able to get a high quality coating.

Materials and tools used

First of all, you need to make sure that the acrylic and hardener are purchased in sufficient quantities. To restore the bowl with your own hands you will need:

solvent
Solvent 647 for bath treatment.
  1. The device for stirring the enamel is a plastic spatula with a blade width of 50 mm.
  2. Five sheets of 25 x 25 cm sandpaper. We recommend purchasing a P 60 brand waterproof sandpaper.
  3. Thinner 647, which is used to treat the bath after sanding and rinsing.
  4. New spatula 10 cm wide.
  5. Scotch tape 5 cm wide in two types: painting and plain.
  6. A medium-sized knife that you will need for cutting tape and processing a cast iron bowl.
  7. Two types of screwdrivers: straight and Phillips.
  8. A stool on which you can mix the ingredients.

The restoration is performed wearing a long-sleeved shirt, respirator, rubber gloves and a hat. If the solution does get on the skin, then it will not cause irritation, but it will be problematic to wipe it off. Hair should not come into contact with the treated surface at all stages of the restoration.

Premises preparation

To protect the floor and walls, use PVC foil, secured with tape. It is desirable that the room contains nothing but a bowl. Therefore, it is recommended to take out all unnecessary and loose items, remove the shower curtain, remove the crossbar. After that, you can start preparing the bath.

PVC foil
PVC film is needed for wall and floor treatment.

If the sinks or cabinet are located close to the bathtub, you need to move them away. Dust can penetrate from the rooms, so you need to insulate the ventilation using PVC film.

Cleaning the restored bath

stripping
Before applying acrylic, you need to clean the bathtub.

After preparing the room, the surface of the bowl is cleaned using emery or a drill equipped with a special nozzle. Some restorers use a grinder with a grinding disc.

To perform manual stripping, it is required to wrap a suitable size wooden block with emery, and then sand the surfaces. The processing should not be overly vigorous, because the mixture will not hold if the surface becomes excessively smooth. Scratching the sides of the bowl is also not allowed.

If the bath has already been stained before restoration, the enamel will need to be removed completely. The bath is smoothed with circular horizontal movements, removing an even layer, removing rust and forming a relief on the inner surface. They work especially carefully with the bottom.

After sanding, the surface should be rough, with no signs of factory coating. As a result of this treatment, liquid acrylic will be better fixed, it will not have to be consumed in large quantities.

Washing and drying

To remove dust residues, wash the bowl and tiles with hot water. It is recommended to use a liquid product that does not contain abrasive particles. Enamel adheres better to the cleaned surface. After washing the bowl, you need to close the taps, remove the shower hose and take them to another room.

washing
Washing and drying the bath before applying the acrylic.

Water droplets must not enter the bath. Make sure no water drips from the tap before applying the acrylic. If there is still a leak, it is necessary to shut off the water or wrap the tap with tape, and then remove the drain and overflow. It is recommended to install a container with a volume of 1.5 liters under the hole, into which excess enamel will drain.

After that, you should wipe dry the bowl and objects located nearby. It is advisable to use a lint-free cotton cloth. If water drops remain in hard-to-reach places, you can remove them with a hairdryer.

bath dryer
If there are drops of water in hard-to-reach places, it is recommended to dry them with a hairdryer.

Laying the flooring and degreasing the bath

degreasing
Degrease the bath with baking soda.

It is important to remove dust from the surface of all objects left in the room as much as possible. If the dust is not completely removed, it will rise during a draft and settle on the enamel, negating the effort expended.

The surfaces are covered with newsprint or film, using tape for fixing. The cast iron surface is then vacuumed and decontaminated with baking soda or solvent.

Preparing liquid acrylic for application

Before mixing the enamel, it must be kept in a warm place for 24 hours. The tool is well taken if the restoration is carried out at a temperature of + 25 degrees. If you plan to apply acrylic in a cool room, you need to warm up the mixture by placing it in a large container filled with hot water.

acrylic hardener
Acrylic must be mixed with a hardener.

In the second step, acrylic is mixed with a hardener. First, open a jar of enamel, stir for a few minutes, and then add a hardener that has the consistency of sour cream. Shake the container with the hardener several times before adding. Work with the hardener is carried out in protective gloves, taking precautions.

After combining the components, they are mixed with a wooden spatula. It is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations, since some products need to be mixed for 10 minutes, and others for 15 minutes. Depending on the brand, acrylic is mixed in 1 or 2 steps.

mixing acrylic
Acrylic must be mixed with a wooden stick in a circular motion.

Stir the acrylic in a circular motion, touching the sides and bottom of the can. Air bubbles should not appear on the surface. A mixer and other similar devices are not used.

Casting acrylic enamel in a bath

step by step instructions for enameling
Bath enamel.

After mixing is complete, you must immediately start enameling. If the mixture is left in the air for 30 minutes, it will become unusable for pouring.

Acrylic is poured into the bath not from a bucket, but from a small plastic container. It is recommended to cut a 1.5 liter plastic bottle in two and wipe it off with a cloth. The acrylic container must be completely dry. The bucket and the cut bottle are placed on a stool.

Bumpers

You need to start pouring acrylic on the left along the edge, gradually moving to the right side. The enamel should cover the sides. It is poured onto these parts of the cast-iron bowl 1 time, adding acrylic to the container as needed. It is important to be careful not to pour the enamel in large quantities, otherwise it will spill onto the floor. The remaining voids must be filled with a spatula.

enamel coating
The enamel must necessarily cover the sides.

Walls

These parts of the bowl are coated in 2 steps. First, the enamel is poured from the edge of the back, where the acrylic layer does not drain so quickly. Then pour from the level to which the composition is stacked when first pouring. After the mixture has completely covered the back of the bowl, you will need to distribute it evenly over the bottom.

2 stage of casting
In the second stage of casting, the composition must be applied from the level to which it stacked during the first pouring.

Sealing bald spots

If you find incompletely sealed areas, you need to collect a small amount of enamel from the bottom and cover the untreated surfaces with a spatula. It will be necessary to inspect the walls and identify errors. In some places, there may be drips, which are removed with a spatula.

sealing of bald spots
If, after covering with acrylic, bald spots become noticeable, it is necessary to close them with a spatula.

Bottom cover

A thick layer of enamel forms at the bottom, which is evenly spread with a spatula and left. The coating will level out on its own. Drops remaining on the sides are removed with a spatula.

distribution of acrylic on the bottom of the bath
the acrylic on the bottom of the bath must be evenly distributed with a spatula.

How to dry a bulk bath

Over time, the coating hardens. If you find defects, you should wait until the end of the polymerization, which lasts 48 hours, and then apply the factory repair kit. The mixture must be removed from the floor immediately, otherwise it will be difficult to remove. The bathroom must be closed for 2 days to prevent dust and debris from entering the surface of the drying bowl.

It's time to put the harness

installation
Installation of drain and overflow.

Acrylic dries 48 hours. After this time, it will be necessary to install the drain-overflow piping. Before starting work, you should remove the drive intended for flowing enamel. Use a knife to remove streaks. It is recommended to check the suitability of the gaskets on the harness. If they become less flexible, they should be sealed with a sealant.

You will need to install a drain and overflow, put the drain pipe in its original position, connect the piping, release the mixer from the film and open the water. The drain should not leak. After these procedures, the bath will be ready for use.

To keep the bowl whiteness and smooth surface for a long time, a neutral cleaning agent should be selected for its care.

Fake Bulk Acrylic

The Stakril company has been producing products for several years with a label of the same design. This means that any product whose label looks like a Stacril label is a fake.

Responsible manufacturers, well-established in the market, are trying to improve the quality of products. But unscrupulous competitors use tricks to entice buyers. For example, they might buy a product, re-bottle it, and sell it under a fictitious brand. After a while, when the brand gains popularity, products begin to be made from low quality raw materials.

Some scammers buy large quantities of hardener products and dilute them with solvent. Such enamel is less durable, it cracks in a couple of months after the start of the bath. In this case, you have to call the repairman and re-carry out the restoration work.

Unscrupulous manufacturers dilute acrylic with a solvent and get more products, but its quality deteriorates sharply. Such acrylic does not adhere well to the surface of the bowl. Similar fakes are sold in all regions of Russia. The label on such a bottle has the wrong color, and the bottle itself is made of second grade plastic.

Some small firms also manufacture their own goods using cheap raw materials. Such acrylic costs about the same: 1400 - 1600 rubles. But such inexpensive products are not suitable for bath restoration.

Before buying enamel, it is recommended to study the history of the brand. Large companies Stakril Ecolor, Plastol, Ekovanna and YarLi, which have been operating on the market for several years, have long won the trust of consumers. They make the finest bulk acrylic. Their products are of high quality, the acrylic of these brands is resistant to cracking and yellowing. The downside of popularity is the fact that the enamels of these brands are most often counterfeited.

The labels of genuine products are evenly colored, glued evenly, have no blisters, and the lids are always marked. The containers themselves are made of high quality PVC, which has a rich color. The purchaser should also pay attention to the seal located on the surface of the cover. If the integrity of the seal is broken, you cannot use such acrylic.

A good restorative is marked with laser lithography on the lid. Enamels "Ekovanna" and "Stakril" are produced with adhesive labels on the lids. It is important to pay attention to all the details of the packaging, which should be the same as on the manufacturer's website. The bottle of genuine acrylic always carries the trademark logo.

Recently, expensive and massive cast iron or rapidly cooling and noisy steel bathtubs have been replaced by light, modern models made of acrylic. They perfectly retain heat, boast a wide range of sizes, a variety of colors and shapes.

one

High-quality acrylic bathtubs are quite expensive, the service life of such products, according to the manufacturer's warranty, is at least 15 years. However, in the process of use, a crack or chip may appear on them, which spoil the appearance or even violate the tightness of the container for washing. In this article, we will show you how you can repair an acrylic bathtub with your own hands.

Operation of acrylic models

Acrylic is a high performance polymer material. It is durable, durable and lightweight. Bathtubs made of this material have low thermal conductivity and a beautiful glossy shine. Acrylic models are produced in rectangular, oval, round, angular shapes, the width of which is 70-170 cm and the length is 120-190 cm. The operation of acrylic products requires compliance with special conditions, if ignored, it may be necessary to repair acrylic bathtubs:

  • Acrylic melts at a temperature of 150 degrees, so it is not allowed to pour boiling water into baths from this material in order to avoid deformation. Acrylic bathtub

    Acrylic bathtub

  • Manufacturers do not recommend placing basins in acrylic models to prevent the formation of chips and cracks.
  • To prevent the bath from cracking, you should avoid dropping heavy objects into it and other mechanical damage.
  • The reason for damage to the surface of acrylic is often the use of aggressive, potent household chemicals that corrode this material.

Important! As a result of improper use, scratches, cracks or chips appear on the surface of the walls and bottom of the acrylic bath. These defects, as a rule, only spoil the appearance of the product, but do not affect the functionality of the container for washing. To bring the bath to its original form, you can make repairs at home.

Repair methods

If, during operation, cracks, chips or scratches appear on the acrylic surface that spoil the appearance of the product, they must be urgently repaired. If left unattended, defects will grow, spread, and then lead to failure of the bath. To repair cracks, chips or scratches in the surface, you can use the following methods:

  1. The fastest but most expensive way is to replace the bathroom. If the product's service life is coming to an end, it can be replaced, in this case, it is more expedient than repairing. sposoby-remonta
  2. In the case of profuse, neglected problems, you can contact companies that repair acrylic bathtubs professionally. Without experience, it is impractical to make a major reconstruction of the product, since it will do more harm than good.
  3. The cheapest way to repair a crack, or how much, is to repair acrylic bathtubs with your own hands. In this case, you only need a special repair kit and a little time, and the termination can be done at home.

Note! If you are going to repair an acrylic bathtub with your own hands, you will need a polishing disc or a regular sponge, bath polishing paste, sandpaper (800-2000 grains), a mixture for making liquid acrylic, alcohol, a drill, and a spatula. To repair a small crack or scratch, acrylic is not needed, repairs can only be done with polishing.

Repair of chips and holes

In the process of improper use of the acrylic bathtub, small chips or holes may appear. Chips are of 2 types: shallow and deep. Minor scratches are removed by careful polishing. You can repair deep chips with liquid acrylic. If a chip is formed, proceed according to the following instructions.

  • The acrylic surface around the chip is carefully processed with 800 grit sandpaper. Hole

    Hole

  • The area to be treated continues to be carefully sanded, gradually reducing the grain size of the sandpaper to 2000.
  • The cleaned area is treated with a simple soapy solution, and then left to dry.
  • Degrease the area around the chip with alcohol.
  • They take a set for repairing acrylic bathtubs, prepare liquid acrylic according to the manufacturer's instructions, it consists of two components - polymethyl methacrylate and a hardener. Repair of chips with liquid acrylic

    Repair of chips with liquid acrylic

  • Using a rubber spatula, the chip is sealed with liquid acrylic so that it is level with the surface of the bath.
  • Leave the sealed chip for 12 hours to dry, and then gently polish.

Important! If you plan to do the restoration of an acrylic bathtub with your own hands, when buying a repair kit, pay attention to the composition of acrylic. It must correspond to the material from which the container for washing is made, since different compositions have different properties, including thermal expansion.

Crack repair

If a heavy or sharp object falls into the acrylic bath during operation, a crack will appear on its surface. To stop the further spread of the defect, it is necessary to repair the coating immediately. This will require a repair kit for acrylic bathtubs and a drill. It is necessary to act according to the following instructions:

  1. First of all, all the stress on the bath is eliminated. Drain the water, release the container from heavy objects, cool. Bathtub crack

    Bathtub crack

  2. Using a drill and a drill with a diameter of 0.5 cm, the ends of the crack rays are carefully drilled to stop further "spreading" of the defect.
  3. Using 800-grit sandpaper, carefully sand the acrylic surface around the crack.
  4. Gradually reducing the grain size of the sanding paper to 2000, continue sanding the area around the damaged area.
  5. To remove dust and dirt, the bath surface is washed with soapy water.
  6. In order for the acrylic to better fit on the surface of the bath, the treated area is degreased with alcohol.
  7. The components for the preparation of liquid acrylic are mixed in the required proportion; for this, a hardener is added to the polymethyl methacrylate. Liquid acrylic for restoration

    Liquid acrylic for restoration

  8. Fill the crack with liquid acrylic evenly with a spatula or rubber spatula.
  9. It will take 12 hours for the acrylic to harden, after which the place to be repaired is carefully sanded .

Experienced craftsmen say that if you accurately select the color of liquid acrylic to match the bath, as well as carefully and thoroughly sand, after the repair, the crack will be invisible even in bright light. It is better to purchase a repair kit from the same manufacturer that makes this bath model, otherwise the repaired places will look like dirty spots.

With proper care, the acrylic bowl will last for tens of years, but sooner or later, the coating still loses its gloss and whiteness. You can do the repair of an acrylic bath with your own hands, just know about the different ways to restore gloss, their real effectiveness and the technique of performing the work. Everything in order.

How to repair damage to the case

Acrylic baths have an extremely low resistance to mechanical damage. If the need for repair is caused by damage to the bowl from an accidentally dropped object, the integrity of the base should be restored before restoring the coating. Note that the steps described below are only necessary if the fiberglass layer is damaged, chipped or delaminated. If the base has retained its integrity, you can use the usual repair kit.

DIY acrylic bath repair

So, the first step is to remove any breakaway fragments and carefully inspect the edges of the hole. You need to make sure that there are no stratified scales at the edges. Otherwise, it may be necessary to remove the exfoliated layers, it is better to tear off the fragments from the outside.

To repair the base, glass mat with a density of 200 g / m2 2... If you are not sure about the presence of impregnation between the glass fibers, it is better to burn the scraps of glass mat in the flame of a gas burner. The binder is a two-component epoxy glue, a budget EDP will be enough.

DIY acrylic bath repair

The essence of the repair is to apply 5–7 layers of fiberglass to the cleaned and degreased surface around the breakdown site. First, with a brush, glue is applied to the edges of the hole with an indent of 3-4 cm, then a piece of glass mat is laid and carefully smoothed, the size of which is 2-3 cm larger than the hole in each direction.

DIY acrylic bath repair

Each subsequent patch is glued after partial polymerization of the resin in the previous layer. To speed up the process, it is recommended to increase the concentration of the hardener by 2–2.5 times, thus, the interval between patches will be about 15–20 minutes. The dimensions of each subsequent patch should be 3-4 cm larger than the previous one. The bath will be ready for further work after complete polymerization of the resin, that is, the next day. Before the restoration of the coating, the puncture site is leveled with the composition of a standard acrylic repair kit and sanded flush with the total surface.

Is simple painting possible

There are only two options to restore the gloss and whiteness of the acrylic coating. The simplest is aerosol-type epoxy paint marked with Ceramics. This method has a right to life, especially given the high cost of bulk acrylic and the complexity of its application.

The main disadvantage of painting is the inability of a thin layer to hide surface defects. The bath will have to be sanding for a long time and tiresomely, gradually increasing the grain index and removing large scratches and chips. Naturally, this should be allowed by the thickness of the acrylic layer - cheap bathtubs have a polymer coating of about 0.5–0.7 mm and most likely it will not work to restore them by painting.

DIY acrylic bath repair

Otherwise, everything is simple: the entire surface is cleaned to remove gloss, then wiped with acetone for degreasing. Then paint is sprayed from a distance of 40–45 cm in one or two thin layers with an interval of 20–30 minutes. When spraying, the formation of drips should not be allowed, if they do appear, they must be blotted with a clean foam sponge and painted over again. You need to work exclusively in a respirator and exclude the occurrence of an open flame in the room.

One aerosol can is enough for 1.8-2 m 2surface. However, when calculating the consumption, the paint must be taken with a margin of about 50%. Firstly, one way or another you will be forced to eliminate errors and defects in painting, and secondly, you will have a "repair kit" without a difference in color.

How Liquid Acrylic Works

In short, an acrylic polymer is the same epoxy resin tinted with white. A feature of the material is its high adhesion, including to glossy surfaces. Despite this, the preparation for the restoration must be very careful.

First of all, the temperature and humidity regime is important. The drier the air in the room, the better, and the presence of splashes or drops must be completely excluded. The optimum temperature for applying acrylic is 25 ºС. It is at this temperature regime that the epoxy composition acquires the most optimal viscosity for application without a brush.

DIY acrylic bath repair

The difference in fluidity with a change in temperature, even by several degrees, can be very significant. At 28–30 ºС the layer will be too thin, and at temperatures below 23 ºС normal polymerization will not occur and the coating will not acquire the required qualities. Naturally, the bath and the room air must be at the same temperature.

Bulk acrylic loses its tack after 4-6 hours and completely polymerizes after two days. Until this moment, the room needs to maintain the optimal temperature regime, and in the first hours after application - in any convenient way to exclude the settling of dust.

Surface preparation for restoration

In any case, it is necessary to knock down the gloss from the surface of the bowl. This is done by hand sanding using waterproof sandpaper. Processing begins with a grain size of 200 grit, then increases by 100-150 grit every 2-3 stages. Sanding ends with a 600 grit treatment, after such treatment, the coating acquires a matte whiteness and is practically devoid of defects. At each increase in grain size, the bath must be flushed with water, getting rid of larger abrasive particles.

DIY acrylic bath repair

At the next stage, the largest surface defects, chips and scratches are eliminated. For this, you can use both a tough-plastic car putty and a repair kit for acrylic bathtubs. The latter is more preferable in the case when it is planned to restore the gloss and color by polishing, rather than pouring a new coating. In this case, the difference in whiteness will definitely be visible, although not very much.

DIY acrylic bath repair

After sealing defects on the surface, these places are re-cleaned until the surface is leveled. Before proceeding with the work, the bathtub must be rinsed with plenty of warm water, completely washing off the white dust, and then dismantle the plumbing and remove the remnants of dirt in the places previously covered with drainage nets.

Cleaning and degreasing

To restore an acrylic bath, special kits are sold, including 30-50 grams of one-component polymer, abrasive materials and polishing paste. Particularly noteworthy are the cleaner and primer in the bulk acrylic kits. The latter must be applied immediately before pouring the polymer, but it makes sense to use a cleaner only if you have not resorted to sanding.

DIY acrylic bath repair

To degrease the surface, you can use acetone or solvent 646. Oil-based products should not be taken, they are not very friendly to acrylate polymers. Do not forget that the surface must be absolutely clean and dry before applying the coating.

Polymer application

Before pouring a new coating, it must first be prepared. The resin is mixed with the hardener in the proportion set by the manufacturer. It is recommended to add about 80–90% of the recommended dosage of the hardener to maintain flowability for a longer period of time. So it will be possible to distribute the composition as evenly as possible without using a brush.

DIY acrylic bath repair

It is only necessary to mix the polymer by hand; the use of a drill or mixer will lead to the entrainment of numerous air bubbles into the liquid mass. It is necessary to dilute liquid acrylic immediately and in full, using a clean, dry container. After that, the composition is poured into another container of the same volume, this is done to avoid areas with uneven mixing in the corners and at the walls.

The empty container is placed under the drain hole of the bath, from the other acrylic is poured in a thin strip along the sides. It is recommended to first disperse the composition with a brush with natural bristles and moisten the sides with cuffs well to prevent the expensive epoxy from spilling out. Subsequently, it will be enough to pour the composition to the innermost edge, achieving the most uniform spreading along the walls.

DIY acrylic bath repair

When the entire composition is spilled, you need to wait 15–20 minutes and collect the remaining polymer that has flowed through the drain hole, substituting an empty container. A new portion of polymer is poured along the sides in those places where the layer is not thick enough and there are gaps. The procedure must be repeated until the resin stops flowing. In parallel, you need to watch out for places where uneven thick streaks can potentially form.

DIY acrylic bath repair

No matter how hard you try, you will not get a perfectly smooth finish with factory quality. To improve the result, you can lightly spray the still fresh polymer with a gas burner flame immediately after all the acrylic has been poured onto the surface. The sharp heating helps to get rid of the trapped gas residues and to smooth the surface as efficiently as possible.

After drying, the bathtub will still need polishing, but not so time consuming. The polishing paste should be applied in small portions and rubbed over the surface with a fiber cloth. Polishing is carried out with wide circular motions; periodically, you need to add a fresh portion of the paste to the napkin.

DIY acrylic bath repair

As you can see, repairing an acrylic bath is not an easy undertaking, but it is definitely easier and cheaper than installing a new bowl or liner.

People make their life as comfortable as possible by constantly inventing something. So, baths made of steel and cast iron are replaced with acrylic ones. One negative point can be added to the positive qualities - the tendency of the coating to damage. However, they are easy to eliminate at home, if you know how and how to glue the acrylic bathtub of the shower stall.

Acrylic bathtub with shower

Why do cracks appear in an acrylic bath

Usually, shower stall malfunctions occur due to prolonged or inaccurate use. Acrylic expands when heated; under any impact, the acrylic bath can burst or crack. There are 2 types of causes of breakdowns:

  • chemical (powdery and highly concentrated bathroom and laundry detergents form scratches, stains);
  • mechanical (due to impacts of heavy and sharp objects, cracks and cracks appear in the acrylic bath).

Having identified the type of defect, you can understand how to repair a crack or scratch in an acrylic bath.

Types of defects, their elimination

There are many ways to damage your acrylic bathtub. All defects can be grouped according to the severity of the damage:

  1. minor defects (roughness, small scratches);
  2. small cracks, large scratches, chips;
  3. large cracks;
  4. through holes.

Layering can be called a separate type.

All-purpose adhesive for fixing an acrylic bathtub will not work because acrylic has low adhesion (the ability to firmly adhere to other surfaces). You need to purchase glue of a special composition with moisture and heat resistant characteristics.

Types of 2-component adhesive for acrylic bathtubs:

Epoxy adhesive

Transparent 2-component adhesive

In both versions, there are two important components in the composition: epoxy resin and hardener. In Moment glue, these components are in separate tubes (for mixing in different proportions).

The most popular are repair kits with a set of all the necessary materials and tools to eliminate the defect. Such a kit can be purchased at any hardware store.

Consider detailed instructions for repairing different types of defects.

Repair of minor defects

Small defects not only do not look aesthetically pleasing, but are also a place for the accumulation of microbes and dirt. At the same time, it will not be difficult to repair minor damage.

Small cracks can be considered those that do not exceed 3 mm. For such damage, the baths do not use glue or liquid acrylic. Necessary materials:

  1. polish (two types - abrasive, wax);
  2. sandpaper (fine-grained);
  3. putty knife;
  4. rubber gloves;
  5. respirator;
  6. felt;
  7. microfiber cloth.

Bath polishing

To seal small cracks in an acrylic bath, you need to perform several steps:

  1. Wash and dry the shower tray thoroughly.
  2. Gently rub the area where there are scratches or small cracks. Rub until the surface is smooth and dull.
  3. Cover the sanded area with a special abrasive polish (using a spatula).
  4. Rub the polished area with felt until smooth.
  5. Apply the second type of polish - wax. Rub with a napkin until shiny.
  6. Wash with detergent using a soft sponge.

In this case, the acrylic bath or shower stall is “glued” by sanding and polishing.

Not all minor blemishes require the use of sandpaper. If the bath has lost its luster and there are no visible scratches on it, then the repair may include only a wax polish.

What to do with a large crack in an acrylic bathtub

Big crack

If a large crack is found on the acrylic bathtub, the cracked area should be repaired immediately. Used tools and materials:

  • drill (drill D = 0.3 cm);
  • liquid acrylic;
  • hardener;
  • polish (wax);
  • sandpaper (different grains - from 800 to 2000);
  • putty knife;
  • acetone;
  • rubber gloves;
  • respirator;
  • felt;
  • microfiber cloth.

Repairing a shower tray will require a number of steps:

  1. Drill holes on both sides of the crack rays with a drill. This must be done so that the damage does not increase in size.
  2. Sand the area, stepping 2–3 cm from the damaged element (including drill holes). First, use a coarser sandpaper, gradually reducing the grain.
  3. Wash with soapy water.
  4. Degrease.
  5. Mix liquid acrylic with hardener.
  6. Place the mixture on the surface.
  7. Wait until dry. Acrylic will take at least 12 hours to cure.
  8. After hardening, sand and polish.

If the crack is large enough (but not through), a layer of fiberglass soaked in epoxy will be required.

If the crack in the acrylic bathtub has turned into a chip or hole

Chipping

Chips are of two types: shallow and deep. Small ones are repaired by careful polishing. While deep ones cannot be simply sanded off, there will still be a notch. Repairing large chips involves the following steps:

  1. Sand and degrease the surface.
  2. Prepare a 2-component liquid acrylic solution from acride resin and hardener.
  3. Seal the chip with the prepared solution.
  4. Allow to dry (time depends on the size of the chip).
  5. After drying, when the surface hardens, it is sanded and polished.

Materials and tools for the restoration of the chip are similar. In places of the highest pressure on the crack, a hole may appear. Restoration work is carried out in two stages: outside and inside.

Hole in the bathroom

Working from the outside:

  1. Rinse and degrease the area on the back of the hole (D approx. 15 cm).
  2. The first fiberglass patch is glued onto the treated area of the acrylic pallet with epoxy glue (there should be 5 cm more of the hole).
  3. Allow the glue to dry.
  4. Apply a second fiberglass patch (10 cm more through damage).
  5. After drying, glue the last patch (15 cm more than the hole).

From the outside, a structure of three reinforced layers will come out. Work from the inside:

  1. Sand and degrease the area around the hole.
  2. Fill it with a liquid acrylic solution.
  3. Smooth the surface with a spatula.
  4. Wait for hardening.
  5. Sandpaper.
  6. Polish.

If the hole of the hole is up to 3 mm (for example, after self-tapping screws), then it can simply be filled with liquid acrylic, as in the instructions for finishing the chip. Do not treat damage with polyurethane foam.

Eliminating delamination

Due to improperly installed plumbing and low-quality materials from which it is made, swelling will occur (acrylic moves away from fiberglass). The delamination is easy to remove. Materials required for this procedure:

  1. epoxy glue;
  2. syringe;
  3. rags.

Algorithm of actions to eliminate delamination:

  1. A puncture is made in the center of the bundle with a syringe and a special glue is injected.
  2. The place of the bulge must be pressed down and held for some time so that the layers stick together.
  3. Remove the remaining adhesive with a rag.

When the layers are glued together, the crack is removed using liquid acrylic.

Preventing defects

Acrylic plumbing will last a long time if defects are prevented:

  • do not fill the bath with boiling water;
  • do not put pots and buckets in it;
  • do not drop heavy and sharp objects onto the surface;
  • do not clean with aggressive household chemicals.

If deficiencies are found, in order to avoid serious damage, you need to:

  1. Place bricks or other durable material under the bottom of the tub if it flexes (for beauty, cover the tub with a plastic screen).
  2. To strengthen, apply latex paint to the walls of the bathtub if they are visible in the sun.

Careful use and timely restoration of plumbing will allow it to last for several more years and save your budget.

Finally

In different cases of damage, different types of defects arise. There is no need to rush to seek professional help or spend money on buying new plumbing fixtures. You can repair an acrylic bathtub yourself.

We also recommend watching the video on how to use the repair kit correctly:

The surface of acrylic bathtubs require correct leaving, compliance simple rules which are often neglected by users. But in vain! This leads to the appearance of scratches and chips on the acrylic, spoiling the appearance of the font. Read about how to remove damage in our article.

Operation of acrylic models

Acrylic is a high performance polymer material. It is durable, durable, lightweight. This material has a low thermal conductivity and a beautiful glossy sheen. Acrylic models are produced in rectangular, oval, round, angular shapes, the width of which is 70-170 cm and the length is 120-190 cm. Operation requires compliance with special conditions, if ignored, repairs may be required:

  • Acrylic melts at a temperature of 150 degrees, it is not allowed to pour boiling water in order to avoid deformation.

Important! As a result of improper use, scratches, cracks or chips appear on the surface of the walls, the bottom of the acrylic bath. These defects, as a rule, only spoil the appearance of the product, but do not affect the functionality of the container for washing.

Causes of defects

With numerous advantages, the polymer has one serious drawback - a low level of resistance to mechanical and chemical stress. For example, if you wash acrylic surfaces with an acid-base agent for a long time, the surface deforms.

Another negative factor is contact with abrasives. Long-term use of a stiff brush during cleaning is sufficient for the occurrence of defects of varying severity.

How to remove a scratch is the most frequently asked question. If irreparable damage is caused, it is better to seek the help of specialists. Minor damage can be easily removed with your own hands at home.

Repair features

The most common types of damage to acrylic products are:

  • mechanical, appearing when inadvertently hitting the surface or burning it. A crack may go as a result of a strong load on it;
  • chemical, which arise from the use of aggressive cleaning agents that leave streaks and stains.

If the defects are not serious, then it is simply repaired, and not replaced with a new one. Before updating the product, you need to choose the right shade, material, coatings, otherwise the work will have to be done twice due to color mismatch.

Acrylic bath defect

Surface preparation

First of all, you must thoroughly wash the surface. To do this, you can use brushes, special products, including disinfectants. Particular attention should be paid to scratches, as they most often accumulate dirt and bacteria. Next, you need to do the following:

  • rinse the surface with clean warm water;
  • degrease the damaged area with a special mixture;
  • dry the scratched surface well (you can use a hair dryer).

Once the surface has been prepared, you can proceed directly to removing scratches on the coating.

Restoration options

The restoration of acrylic is possible in three ways:

  • apply two-component enamel;
  • use liquid acrylic, the method is called "pouring";
  • using an acrylic liner.

You need to start the restoration with preparatory work. Incorrectly performed procedures for preparing the upper part of the bowl will nullify all restoration work. After a short time, the acrylic surface will be cracked again, the gloss of the upper layer of the sink will fade, you will need to glue the hole on the surface. The question arises: how to restore an acrylic bath.

Restoration with liquid acrylic: pros, cons of the method

One of the main advantages is the bath's long service life. After updating, it can be used for more than 10 years. Acrylic spreads evenly over the surface of the cast iron product as it is poured rather than applied with a brush. The product fills microscopic cracks, leveling the surface.

The enamel for restoration is harmless to health, does not emit a strong odor. It dries quickly, so the work is done on a tight schedule. But this method of restoration has a drawback, you will have to wait 2 days. We need to close the room. Otherwise, dust particles deposited on the drying acrylic layer will spoil the appearance of the surface.

Most owners prefer white bathtubs, but during the restoration process, tinting can be done by painting the bowl in any other color.

Using enamel for restoration

You can restore acrylic products using enamel. This type of surface repair will save money. In addition, the work is not difficult.

Enamel consists of substances with a very pungent and unpleasant odor. Therefore, for the safety of the respiratory tract, you need to work in a respirator. Hands are protected with rubber gloves.

We start repairing the surface

Before applying to the surface, enamel is combined with a hardener, strictly following the recommendations in the instructions. Outwardly, the mixture will resemble paint.

Using a brush, apply the enamel in the following sequence: the first layer with horizontal strokes, after 15 minutes, without waiting for the applied layer to dry, vertical strokes as the second layer.

acrylic bath enamel

The enamel is especially carefully applied to the bottom, which bears the greatest load, where you can most often see a chip. A spray can simplify the work. We do not miss a single centimeter of coverage. The restoration is complete.

The enamel will completely harden after a week. It is necessary to keep cleanliness around the sink. Make sure that dust particles do not settle on the surface of the new coating.

The restoration of the product removes large potholes and chips. A big problem will require the application of several layers of material.

Using the inlay for the restoration

The acrylic liner itself must be ordered at the factory, where it will be made in the required dimensions. The use of the liner will be relevant if the question arises of what to do when the acrylic bathtub is cracked. In this way, you can reanimate the product or how to remove a through hole.

The work requires full compliance with step-by-step instructions.

  • Work begins with the preparatory steps described earlier.
  • Place marks on a new bowl under the drain, overflow. There is a simple method, when the bowl, which is being restored, is smeared with toothpaste, an insert is lowered into it. It must be pressed firmly and pulled out quickly. On the back of the insert you will see the places of the drain and overflow holes. They are drilled out.
  • The surface of the old bowl is completely covered with a sealant, construction foam, without missing a single centimeter, including the sides.
  • Without missing time, the insert is inserted inside, with the use of force is pressed against the old bowl in order to glue them together.
  • In order for the liner to lie firmly on the bottom, you need to stand with clean feet near the drain hole, you need to walk along the bottom along the entire length of the surface.
  • Excess construction foam or adhesive is removed with a cloth.
  • The drain and overflow elements are put in place.
  • So that the new bowl does not deform when the glue dries, you need to fill it with water for 24 hours and leave it. Later, the water is poured out.
  • The insert will extend the life of the product by 10 years. Repairing with an insert is the answer to how to repair a hole in an acrylic bathtub and how to remove large cracks.

Installing a bath in a bath

This option is used for through damage. In this case, an acrylic liner is attached to the place of the defect on the other side of the bowl with glue.

Using folk methods

If you suddenly do not have a special putty at hand, and the store is closed and you cannot purchase a repair kit, then you need to use the means at hand. There are folk ways that are still successfully repairing defects in the form of chips.

  • The first way: we will make a mixture of BF-2 glue and chalk powder. In the place where the enamel has broken off, glue is spread and sprinkled with fine powder, after which the excess is removed with a spatula. The procedure is repeated until the chip surface is even with the enamel. This is a fairly durable component that will last about 5-6 months. The surface to be restored in this way needs to dry for 4 days.
  • The second method is to use a mixture of epoxy resin and porcelain chips. The method of application is the same as for glue with chalk. Cover the damaged area of the enamel with resin and sprinkle with crumbs. This is a more durable patch that will last for about a year.

Remember that these methods are temporary and must be reworked using factory-supplied components. But if you urgently need to restore the chip, then they should be used. But the most effective way is to seal the chips with epoxy enamel.

Elimination of holes

Despite the fact that repairing holes is more difficult than repairing other damage, you can work with such defects at home.

Attention! If the hole has a small diameter (for example, left after self-tapping screws), they can be filled with liquid acrylic. In this case, work is carried out according to the scheme described above.

When the hole is large, it can be repaired by reinforcement. The work is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. The reverse side, where the hole is located, is washed and degreased. It is necessary to process an area with a diameter of 15 cm.
  2. A fiberglass patch is glued to the hole. It can be purchased together with the set for the reinforcement of acrylic bathtubs. The cover is fixed with epoxy glue. It should extend over the bowl by at least 5 cm.
  3. After the glue has dried, the second patch is fixed. It should completely overlap the first one.
  4. At the end, the last overlay is fixed, which covers the rest by 15 cm or more.

Further work is carried out from the inside of the product. The area next to the hole is cleaned with sandpaper and degreased with alcohol. Liquid acrylic is poured into the hole, after which it is leveled. Upon completion of all work, the material is smoothed with fine-grained sandpaper and polished.

Once the composition has hardened, the bowl can be filled with water.

Repair of minor defects

Small defects not only do not look aesthetically pleasing, they are a place of accumulation of microbes and dirt. At the same time, it will not be difficult to repair minor damage.

Small cracks can be considered those that do not exceed 3 mm. For such damage, neither glue nor liquid acrylic is used. Necessary materials:

  1. polish (two types - abrasive, wax);
  2. sandpaper (fine-grained);
  3. putty knife;
  4. rubber gloves;
  5. respirator;
  6. felt;
  7. microfiber cloth.

To seal small cracks, you need to perform several steps:

Not all minor blemishes require the use of sandpaper. If the shine is lost, there are no visible scratches, then the repair may include only a wax polish.

A little about damage prevention

Of course, knowing how to repair enamel or deal with rust can be a bit casual about the bowl coating.

Acrylic Surface Maintenance Tips:

  1. choose a mild cleaning agent without abrasives of any fraction;
  2. do not allow the bowl to come into contact with hard materials (basins, hammer);
  3. do not pour acid or acid-containing preparations into the font;
  4. do not scratch the bowl with sharp objects (at the time of repair, it is better to cover the surface with a soft cloth or bubble wrap);
  5. do not use chlorine and other bleaches;
  6. do not jump (even a baby can damage the bottom);
  7. choose a product with walls that have an acceptable thickness threshold.

The last point is especially true for acrylic bowls. The fact is that many manufacturers allow thinning of the walls, casting fonts of exquisite shapes. Therefore, it is extremely important to choose a bowl "with a light" If you turn the font in front of a bright light source, it should be uniformly flat, without translucent areas. This means that the manufacturer did not save on material, you are not in danger of restoring the coating, restoration of a chip on the wall or bottom in the near future.

In everyday life, it is difficult to avoid minor troubles. Refreshed the repair, accidentally dripped paint onto the surface. Or a beloved cat did a good job with its claws while washing, which left deep scratches on the once smooth acrylic surface. A basin of linen, having escaped from his hands, fell on board, allowing a chip on the enamel. Whatever material the bathtub is made of, it is not insured against damage. But is it possible to correct the oversight?

Remove scratches on acrylic and chips on enamel

Numerous firms offer expensive surface renovation services. They are ready to re-coat or install liners that transform an old bathtub into a new one. Meanwhile, it is quite possible to carry out repairs with your own hands, as well as independently return the former gloss to ceramic, enameled surfaces. This can be done by anyone who has ever used a spray paint can and knows how to sand the surface with sandpaper. For example, the products of the German company Cramer enjoy a good reputation, which allows you to make repairs yourself.

To remove the main damage, chips on ceramic (porcelain) products, Cramer has released the Cramer Reparatur-Set, as well as the Cramer Star White bar-corrector. The first is two-component and is suitable for ceramics, enamel, acrylic, powder coated surfaces. The second is, in fact, a special one-component paint for plumbing, designed to seal small dents, scratches and defects in the coating of plumbing fixtures, ceramic tiles, batteries, sinks, furniture. It takes just a couple of hours to repair acrylic bathtubs at home or upgrade a sink with these kits. And do not touch the repaired surface for another 4 days, so that the applied solution will acquire the necessary strength. In this case, you will need to perform five simple steps.

  1. Clean the surface, depending on the material from which it is made, either from rust or from chipped fragments. Degrease.
  2. Mix the required amount of filler with a hardener in a ratio of 30: 1. The mass must be used within 4 minutes, otherwise it will harden and will not be repairable.
  3. Apply the mixture to the chipped or damaged acrylic. When repairing porcelain or ceramics, you can glue the pieces of broken-off material with a filler compound. Allow the mixture to harden for 30 minutes.
  4. Sand the surfaces: for enamelled, porcelain items, use the brown sandpaper included in the kit, for acrylic and fiberglass - gray, which is intended for wet sanding, that is, using water. When the surface to be repaired is completely smooth, remove dust from it.
  5. Apply an aerosol topcoat to the repair site. There should be so many layers to completely hide the place of application of the putty mass. This process completes the repair of cracks and chips in acrylic bathtubs and repairing damage to enamel, ceramic or porcelain surfaces.

Everything you need (tubes with putty and hardener, aerosol with topcoat, two sheets of brown ceramic or enamel sandpaper and one gray for acrylic and even a spatula) is included in the repair kit.

BTW.

All components of the kit must be handled with care. It must be stored in a place out of the reach of children. When spraying the composition from a spray can, protect your eyes and try not to get on your skin. It is best to use gloves when working.

We eliminate stains on the enamel

What to do if paint or glue accidentally dripped onto the enamelled product? How to clean metal deposits on the sink without damaging the surface? Believe it or not, an eraser will help. Not simple, of course, but plumbing. It removes even those stains that cannot be removed with traditional cleaning agents without damaging the surface or changing its color. At the same time, there are no acids in the composition of the universal plumbing eraser Cramer Wannen Gummi at all. And they use it in the same way as the most common one, which erases notes with a pencil from paper. Only in the case of paper, it is undesirable to use water (everyone knows how it ends), but for a plumbing eraser, the help of water increases the cleaning efficiency.

BTW.

The eraser cannot be used on acrylic and fiberglass surfaces.

We reanimate acrylic products

Not all plumbing products can be cleaned with the usual means: abrasive or characterized by an aggressive environment. Instead of putting things in order, they can cause irreparable harm. We are talking, in particular, about acrylic. We have already written about what you can not wash acrylic surfaces. German manufacturers offer a product that not only effectively cleans, but also removes stains, minor scratches, limescale, restores color, while polishing the acrylic surface. This is a paste for cleaning, polishing Cramer Acryl Star. It contains specially selected cleaning and polishing components.

With the help of the paste, you can not only restore the whiteness of the acrylic bath or sump, but also sand deep scratches. For this purpose, the Cramer Acryl Star Kit includes 1200 and 2500 grit sanding papers.

Remove scratches from acrylic in this way:

  1. Remove damage to the wet surface by moving the grinding paper with a grain of 1200 direct movements along the scratch, and then change the direction of grinding by 90 °.
  2. Continue wet grinding paper with a grainability of 2500, ensuring that the surface becomes smooth and matte.
  3. Apply ACRYL-STAR on the cleansed surface and polish it with a soft, damp cotton cloth for 3-5 minutes before reaching the desired shine.

BTW.

If you correctly perform grinding, then the surface of the acrylic in the scratch can be brought to the mirror glitter, so that even the memories of damage will remain.

We achieve the perfect cleanliness of mixers, molded marble products

In addition to acrylic, special care requires products from mold marble (sinks, pallets). For them, special means are provided. For example, a paste for cleaning and leaving, intended for high-quality surfaces from mineral casting (injection marble, kvaril, polyethylene). Specially selected for cleaning and care components of the Mineral-Star paste remove lime, dirt, other deposits, not leaving scratches. Due to the high concentration of the drug for one cleaning of products from mineral raw materials, the paste is required quite a bit - literally magnitude with the forest walnut, so that one tube is enough for a long time. In addition, it is absolutely harmless, since it does not contain acid, so you can not be afraid of irritation in your arms. That's just for the surfaces with the Easy To Clean, this cleaning paste is not suitable, since it also has a polishing effect.

Another problem during cleaning is to spoil one product while cleaning the other. For example, the means for bringing into order of reinforcement, as a rule, contain strong acids necessary to remove lime deposits. And they, in turn, negatively affect the enamelled surface. As a result, the cranes begin to glisten, and the shower pallet, the bath is gradually losing its globe. German producers have a paste for cleaning and polishing Cramer Chrom Star with a volume of 100 ml. It restores the color, eliminates strong contamination and traces of corrosion from matte and shiny chrome surfaces, and also brings old fittings to shine. The composition of it is harmless to enamel, ceramics.

BTW.

There are no problems in the use of drugs. It is just necessary to be lost with a damp sponge on a wet surface a small amount of a paste with a forest walnut, to solve warm water and wipe dry. In the case of the Cramer Chrom Star, you can still polish the purified surface using a conventional wet cotton cloth.

Today, Cramer offers perhaps the widest range of means for repair, cleaning and polishing plumbing. If you want to buy a set for repairing acrylic baths, as well as tools for cleaning, polishing plumbing products, you can get acquainted with them in more detail.

Conclusion

If you have scratches or other defects on the bathroom, you know how to deal with them. And thanks to the methods of prevention, you will reduce their appearance to a minimum.

Along with metal and cast-iron products, polymer plumbing received widespread. Acrylic products are very practical, but mechanical damage is capable of significant damage to the coating. Repair of acrylic baths are needed if chips, deep cracks or even through holes appear on the plumbing.

Restoration of plumbing equipment can be implemented in the following ways:

  • DIY acrylic bathtub repair;
  • restoration of the product by specialists.

The second method is, of course, preferable, but if you want to save money, you can fix the defects of acrylic bathtubs yourself.

Independent restoration of plumbing equipment

Before you repair an acrylic bathtub, it is worth understanding the main problems and causes of malfunctions.

The main types of damage to polymer equipment are divided into two types:

  • Damage resulting from mechanical impact: heavy objects falling onto the surface, burning through the coating. Also, a crack on an acrylic bathtub occurs due to the heavy load on the plumbing;
  • Chemical attack. Do not be surprised if the acrylic bathtub is cracked after its surface has been treated with aggressive detergents containing chlorine or oxalic acid.

In order to repair plastic bathtubs with your own hands, you will need a lot of patience and a little knowledge. All the necessary theoretical material for troubleshooting polymer equipment is in front of you. So all that remains is to act.

What to do if an acrylic bathtub is cracked? Before repairing existing defects, you should purchase materials for repair separately or buy a special repair kit.

What do you need to repair plumbing?

A standard set of materials for the restoration of polymer plumbing consists of:

  • rubber gloves and a respirator;
  • a set of sandpaper;
  • liquid acrylic;
  • adhesive for polymer coatings;
  • polishes.

Tip: You will need glue if there are holes in the coating. Therefore, you need to have a special composition at hand so that you have something to glue the acrylic bathtub. The very method of restoring plumbing depends not only on the type of damage, but also on its size.

If an acrylic bathtub bursts or minor defects appear on the surface, the instructions for restoring the plumbing will be the same; in case of more serious damage, a different approach will be needed.

Repair of minor defects

cracks in acrylic bathtub repair

Kit for removing small chips and scratches on acrylic surfaces

First, you need to understand how to seal up an acrylic bathtub with small scratches and chips. From the materials you will need:

  • two-component acrylic;
  • epoxy adhesive;
  • sandpaper;
  • special tape;

For your information: Repair of a crack in an acrylic bathtub up to 3 mm in size is performed using epoxy glue. If the defects reach large sizes, it is worth using tape. In this case, the repair of a plastic bathtub will begin with the process of degreasing the plumbing. After that, a special tape is glued to the crack, after removing the film from it.

Repair of an acrylic bathtub with minor defects up to 5 mm in length can be carried out using only the specified materials.

Recovery instructions:

  • To improve the adhesion of the glue to the surface of the product, the crack boundaries are slightly expanded with a knife;
  • the surface is degreased;
  • acrylic paint is diluted with a hardener;
  • a small amount of the resulting composition is applied to the area requiring repair;
  • the treated areas are sealed with tape for five to six hours;
  • then the film is removed, the repaired plumbing is treated with alcohol, and then polished;
  • polish is applied to the restored part of the plumbing to obtain a glossy coating.

Video repair of acrylic bathtubs clearly demonstrates the process of restoring the coating with minor damage. The video tells how to repair a crack in a bathroom and what materials to use during restoration.

Acrylic flakes off, what to do?

video repair of acrylic bathtubs

Adhesive mixtures for filling voids when peeling acrylic

Many people who have bought polymer plumbing are wondering: why is the acrylic bathtub swollen? In some cases, acrylic can break away from the fiberglass, i.e. swell. This can happen for a number of reasons:

  • Firstly, when the acrylic bathtub staggers, the load on the surface is unevenly distributed, so the acrylic can lag behind the walls of the plumbing;
  • Second, you might have purchased low-quality equipment that used cheap materials.

A repairman for acrylic bathtubs can easily fix this problem, but since the procedure is quite simple, you can do it yourself.

Tip: You will need a special glue for gluing polymer materials. In the place of the bulge, you need to make a hole and insert glue there. After the layers are completely glued, repair work is done to eliminate the usual crack. The algorithm for restoring the coating in case of damage of this kind has already been described earlier.

Repair of serious defects

how to repair an acrylic bathtub

Large defects are cleaned with a special tool and a new protective layer of enamel is applied

If an acrylic bathtub is leaking, it indicates that there is serious through damage. In this situation, not just cosmetic elimination of defects will be required, but reinforcement. If the acrylic bathtub is crooked, it is better to reinstall it, otherwise it will leak sooner or later.

If this trouble did occur, you should answer the question of how to repair an acrylic bathtub with such damage? First, you will need to get a piece of fiberglass, which will be used to seal the holes. And the process of work itself will be as follows:

  • the edges of the through crack should be cleaned with an ordinary knife;
  • damaged areas are treated with fine-grit sandpaper;
  • then the surface is thoroughly wiped with alcohol;
  • the defect is covered with a layer of epoxy resin;
  • after that, the product should dry out for several hours;
  • the sealed area must be cleaned with sandpaper;
  • after the surface is smooth, it should be treated with alcohol;
  • as soon as the surface is degreased, polish should be applied to a clean soft cloth and the coating should be processed.

Take your time to throw away your plumbing if your acrylic bathtub is cracked. Often, such damage must be repaired. With high-quality performance of work, repaired products can last from two to five years.

How to prevent breakage?

how to glue the acrylic bathtub

Strong frame will prevent deformation of the structure and help to avoid breakage

Unfortunately, most people ignore the plumbing "hints" that signal trouble is approaching.

  • If an acrylic bathtub creaks, it means that the plumbing was originally installed incorrectly, or the walls and bottom of the equipment are very thin. But there are ways to eliminate this nuisance.
  • In a situation where an acrylic bathtub sags, bricks or blocks can be placed under its base. This method is suitable for those who have a bathtub covered with a plastic screen. This solution will help to significantly reduce the load on the inner surface of the product and to avoid the appearance of cracks.
  • Look at the purchased polymer product in sunlight, if the acrylic bathtub shows through, this is a bad sign. But you should not be upset, in such a situation you can purchase latex paint, which is applied in bulk to the plumbing coating. This will make the equipment more robust, which will reduce the risk of defects.

Many people are interested in the question, can the restored plumbing last a long time? In any case, the restoration of equipment will extend the life of polymer products for at least a couple of years. Considering the relative cheapness of the procedure, this event is quite profitable.

Conclusion

Having figured out how to fix an acrylic bathtub, you can easily eliminate almost any defects in polymer plumbing, carry out restoration and repair on your own. Quaril baths are restored in a similar way.

If the acrylic bath leaks, the damaged surface should be treated with special glue. After that, the plumbing can be used for its intended purpose.

A polymer bath can be saved in almost any type of damage, so take your time to get rid of old equipment, because it can serve you for more than one year.

When using acrylic bathtubs, consumers often face different problems.

A casually placed metal bucket will scratch the coating. The cigarette burns through the acrylic. A heavy object falls onto the coating and it bursts or, worse, a breakthrough or delamination appears.

Of course, there is little pleasant, because the appearance of the plumbing deteriorates. But with all the above defects, you can handle it yourself and completely restore the coating. How to restore the surface in case of cracks, breakdowns and delamination - read below in our article. And about the fight against scratches и chipped - we have prepared for you separate material .

Surface preparation

First of all, before carrying out any restoration work on the acrylic bathtub, you need to prepare the surface:

  • rinse the tub thoroughly with warm water;
  • apply detergent on the surface (you can also use a regular soap solution);
  • leave to soak for 20-30 minutes.
  • wipe the font with a soft sponge - special attention should be paid to the damaged area, it needs to be cleaned more thoroughly;
  • rinse abundantly with water;
  • degrease the damaged area. How to do this, read in the special article.

How to repair a crack with your own hands?

photo 5

What to do if the acrylic bathtub coating cracked during operation, how to repair the crack? It is important to understand that it needs to be eliminated as quickly as possible in order to avoid further spread. Indeed, under the influence of constant load and temperature difference, it can grow significantly.

Such repairs are easy to do with your own hands using a special repair kit , according to the instructions below.

Usually, repair kit contains all the components necessary for recovery, in addition to it you only need drill or screwdriver, иmolar tape .

STEP 1. First, you need to drill out the crack along the edges, this will help not to grow it in the future. Take a thin drill bit (diameter is fine 5mm ) and at high RPM make small holes at the very ends of the crack.

photo 1

It is very important not to drill deep, you need to dive only 2-3 mm into the acrylic surface, this is usually sufficient.

STEP 2. Next, you can begin to expand the crack. This is necessary in order for the repair compound to completely fill the damage. Run the same drill along the entire length of the crack, creating a depression 1-2 mm .

photo 2

STEP 3. Now you need to glue the area around with molar tape in order not to damage the whole coating, and start giving it a light roughness. To do this, take sandpaper 1000 - 1200 and in a circular motion, begin to shuffle the floor. Remove all shavings and thoroughly wipe the surface of the defect with soapy water.

photo 6

STEP 4. Mix liquid acrylic and hardener in the proportions recommended by the manufacturer.

Apply the mixture to the damage by smoothing with plastic or rubber trowel. It takes about 24 hours to dry. photo 3

Acrylic bathtubs have completely different shades of white and therefore it can be very problematic to get exactly the same tone when renovating. Repair kit manufacturers produce acrylic for warm and cold white tones, so it's important to know which one you need.

STEP 5. It's time to polish. Cover the area around with molar tape. Take a set of sandpaper and, starting with the coarsest grain size (the smaller the number on the back, the larger it is), "sand" the surface, gradually moving to a smaller one. After the bump of acrylic has completely disappeared and the surface has become homogeneous to the touch, wipe it thoroughly with soapy water.

Next, you need to take the polish from the kit and apply it to a fleece napkin. Rub in the paste in a circular motion to bring the coating to a mirror-like shine.

What if the shower stall burst?

Bowl shower cabins are created using exactly the same technologies as acrylic bathtubs. Therefore, all the information provided on the restoration of acrylic bathtubs is also true for shower cabins.

Repairing holes with a repair kit at home

How to repair a through hole, because they require much more serious repairs? For such a case, manufacturers of bathtubs produce special repair kits. Their equipment differs from those discussed above only in that there are fiberglass sheets and special glue for them. Let's take a closer look at how to use them.

STEP 1. First, you need to prepare the surface for repair: carefully remove all chips around the damage and debris from the edges of the hole.

photo 7

By the breakdown will be needed access from both sides , therefore, if it is impossible to "crawl" to the defect from the reverse side, you will have to dismantle the font

STEP 2. Cut the fiberglass into sheets of the desired size. A minimum of 3 sheets is required. It is better if the first sheet is on 3 cm go beyond the boundaries of the breakdown, and each subsequent one - on 2 cm more than the previous one. For example: if the hole 2x2 cm , then the first sheet should be 8x8 cm , second 10x10 and third 12x12 .

photo 8

This will provide better adhesion to the bath surface.

STEP 3. Now you need to glue the fiberglass sheet well with glue and attach it to the back of the hole. Repeat the same for the remaining layers.

photo 9

Each next layer must be glued after the previous one has completely dried - 2-3 hours .

STEP 4. It remains to mix liquid acrylic with a hardener according to the manufacturer's instructions and apply it over the layers of fiberglass from the "finishing" side. It is important to smooth it well with a rubber trowel, covering not only the fiberglass but also the edges of the hole.

photo 10

STEP 5. You can start sanding and polishing. How to do this is described in detail in step 5 of the previous chapter.

How can you glue small diameter holes?

If the hole diameter is up to 8 mm, you can safely fill it with acrylic without gluing it with fiberglass. Such damage often occurs when installation of the frame on the bath when the guides are screwed on and the bottom is drilled through. To eliminate such holes, you can use the liquid acrylic from the repair kit, injecting it into the hole with a conventional medical syringe. After the polymer has dried, it is necessary to grind and polish the surface (step 5. of the chapter "Removing cracks").

What to do if the coating is peeling?

Often, when buying a cheap product, after a while, acrylic delamination and swelling occurs. What can contribute to this:

  • Installation errors. The bath sways, the walls are deformed, which leads to the delamination of the coating.
  • Poor quality material.
In order not to face such problems, read our special articles: How to choose a quality acrylic bathtub? И how to install it correctly?

What if the acrylic is swollen, how to glue it?

photo 11

It is necessary to glue it back using a special adhesive for polymer products. If the "bubble" is not cracked, you need to pierce it with a syringe with a thick needle and inject glue there.

If there is a crack, slightly bend the detached layer and use a syringe to evenly distribute the composition so that the entire delamination is glued.

Further actions are the same as for the restoration of cracks.

There is a more radical and qualitative, but less accurate approach. You need to cut off all the swollen acrylic and instead fill this place with a liquid composition from a repair kit. Carrying out the same procedures as when eliminating the breakdown ( STEP 5 и STEP 6 previous chapter). In this case, the integrity of the coating will definitely be restored, but such a patch will immediately catch the eye. Which method to use is up to you.

Conclusion

Although it is not an easy task to repair the coating of an acrylic bathtub, everyone can do it - repairs can be easily done with your own hands, using the instructions that are presented in our article. But whatever you have to do, you need to take good care of your plumbing, take care of take care of her and follow the series simple rules ... Then the font will delight you for many years.

Repair of acrylic bathtubs - the secrets of surface restoration at home

Acrylic baths have recently become widespread due to their practicality and hygiene. Their only drawback is that the surface is easily damaged as a result of chemical, mechanical and thermal effects, although in this case the plumbing can be restored. It is not at all difficult to do this, as you can see from this article, in which I will tell you how to repair acrylic bathtubs at home.

Such defects on the surface of an acrylic bath can be eliminated at home.

Types of damage and ways to eliminate them

First of all, I note that acrylic baths do not tolerate mechanical stress, in addition, they are unstable to acids, alkalis, solvents and other chemical compounds ... Therefore, if the rules of operation are not followed, this plumbing very quickly loses its original appearance or even begins to leak.

True, damage to the surface is not excluded if these rules are followed, because emergency situations occur, for example, if a heavy object is dropped onto the bathtub. This leads to the formation of chips and cracks.

Of course, you can entrust the restoration of plumbing to specialists. However, the cost of their services often reaches half the cost of a bath.

Therefore, it is much more profitable to repair an acrylic bathtub with your own hands, besides, as already mentioned above, it is not at all difficult. The only thing to consider is that different types of damage are eliminated in different ways. Therefore, below we will consider how to eliminate the following types of damage:

Types of damage to acrylic bathtubs

Elimination of minor scratches

If the surface of the bath has lost its luster or even has small scratches on it, polishing will help solve this problem. This procedure is performed as follows:

  1. before removing scratches, you need to thoroughly wash the bath and dry it;
  2. then it is necessary to wipe the area with scratches with sandpaper with the finest grain. You need to rub carefully so as not to add scratches even more;
  3. when the surface takes on a smooth matte look, and all scratches disappear, a polish with a fine abrasive should be applied to the prepared area. Keep in mind that it is necessary to use special compounds designed for acrylic bathtubs, otherwise a high-quality result cannot be achieved.

After applying the polish, the surface must be rubbed with felt, as a result of which the surface will become absolutely smooth, but not yet completely shiny;

  1. now you need to apply wax polish without abrasive to the surface and rub the area with a microfiber cloth until shine appears;
  2. after polishing, the bath should be rinsed with liquid detergent and wiped with a soft cloth.

Repair kit for polishing

On sale you can find a repair kit for polishing, which contains two types of polishes and napkins, i.e. everything you need to complete this operation.

I must say that sanding surfaces with sandpaper and the use of abrasive polish are not always required. If the surface has lost its shine, but there are no visible large scratches, you can only do with a wax composition .

Repairing chips and deep scratches

Now let's look at how to repair a chipped bath with our own hands. Of course, it will not work to clean it with sandpaper, since a notch will remain on the surface anyway.

In this case, a special repair kit for acrylic bathtubs will help, which contains an acrylic reducer and other components. In particular, it includes an applicator for applying acrylics, sandpaper, napkin and polishes.

The price of repair kits starts from 500 rubles. This, of course, is significantly lower than the cost of specialist repair services.

Applying liquid acrylic to the damaged area

So, the repair process is as follows:

  1. if a deep scratch is being repaired, it should be slightly widened to allow the acrylic reducer to penetrate. You can expand the scratch using a mounting knife;
  2. then the surface around the chip or scratch must be carefully sanded with fine sandpaper. The width of the cleaned area should be about a centimeter;
  3. after that, the surface of the chip or scratch must be degreased. To do this, you can use alcohol;
  4. now the damaged area needs to be filled with acrylic restorer using the applicator that contains the repair kit. Level the surface with them so that the composition is flush with the surface of the bath, i.e., in fact, the usual filling is carried out;

The sealed chip needs to be sanded and polished.

  1. after polymerization of the composition, the surface must be sanded with fine sandpaper and polished according to the scheme described above.

This completes the work. I must say that liquid acrylic may slightly differ in shade from a bath. The fact is that it is almost impossible to choose a shade, since even bathtubs of the same manufacturer from different batches can have different shades, which, of course, is noticeable only if you put them side by side.

However, you can only notice that the color is different by looking closely at the repaired area. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with that.

After installing an acrylic bath, home craftsmen are usually interested in how to seal the joint with the wall? For these purposes, it is better to use a plumbing sealant that fills the gap. In addition, an acrylic border should be glued to the corner.

Crack repair

So, we figured out the elimination of chips and cracks. But, what if the bathtub cracked and began to leak? The answer is simple - use the same repair kit for acrylic bathtubs.

I must say that repairing a crack in an acrylic bath is in many ways similar to eliminating chips and scratches, however, there are some nuances:

  1. as in the previous case, before repairing the crack, you need to widen it a little and sand the areas around it;
  2. then, on both sides of the crack, holes with a diameter of about a millimeter must be drilled so that it does not diverge further;
  3. now the surface needs to be washed and degreased;
  4. further work is performed according to the scheme described above.

Keep in mind that cracks must be repaired as soon as they appear, otherwise it will be much more difficult to fix them. However, the method described above is suitable only for small cracks, several centimeters long. If the crack is large, reinforcement should be done as when repairing holes. .

Set for reinforcement of holes in acrylic bathtubs

Repair of through holes

Often people are interested in forums - how to close a hole in an acrylic bathtub? This procedure is the most difficult, however, it is also quite possible to cope with it on your own.

True, if the hole is small - a few millimeters in diameter, then it can simply be filled with liquid acrylic according to the scheme described above ... As a rule, such holes remain after self-tapping screws.

If the hole is large, then it must be reinforced. The instructions for doing this work look like this:

  1. before gluing the hole, you need to prepare the back side. Namely - you need to thoroughly wash and degrease the area around the hole with a diameter of about 15 cm;
  2. then a fiberglass patch is glued to the hole from the back. The latter is included in the hole reinforcement kit.

The cover should be glued with epoxy glue. Keep in mind that it must cover the hole by at least 5 cm. ;

A reinforcement layer must be glued to the hole from the back side.

  1. after the glue dries, another overlay is applied, which should overlap the previous one by several centimeters;
  2. then, after the surface has dried, a third reinforcing layer is glued, which should overlap the hole by at least 15 cm;
  3. then the work is performed from the inside - the area around the hole is sanded and degreased;

In the photo - filling the hole with acrylic

  1. after that, the hole is filled with liquid acrylic and leveled;
  2. at the end of the work, the repaired surface must be sanded with fine sandpaper and polished.

Often people ask - how to cut the fiberglass to the size of the hole? To do this, you can attach the canvas to the hole from the inside and mark it. After that, the blade is cut with an assembly knife or ordinary scissors.

After completing all these manipulations, the bath is ready for use. As you can see, even eliminating through holes is straightforward. The main thing is to choose the right repair kit so that it contains all the necessary components, including polishes, epoxy glue and fiberglass .

Adhesive for polymeric materials

Eliminating delamination

Finally, consider what to do if the surface of the bath is swollen, i.e. acrylic has moved away from fiberglass. This defect is eliminated quite simply, the only thing is that you need a special glue for gluing polymer materials.

So, the work is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. in the center of the swollen bubble it is necessary to make a small hole and inject glue into the space between the fiberglass and acrylic. To do this, you can use a regular syringe;
  2. then the acrylic surface must be pressed down so that it adheres to the fiberglass base. In this case, the protruding glue must be removed;
  3. now you need to seal the hole with liquid acrylic according to the scheme described above and then polish the repaired area.

Another unpleasant phenomenon that owners of acrylic bathtubs may encounter is an unpleasant smell. There are not so many options for what to do if the plumbing stinks. Manufacturers recommend taking hot water into the bath and letting it cool down, and the procedure should be performed within a week.

Here, in fact, are all the nuances of repairing an acrylic bathtub.

At home, you can carry out any repair of acrylic bathtubs, including even the elimination of large through holes. There are special kits on sale for this work. Therefore, the main thing is only to choose the right set for solving certain problems, as well as adhere to the above recommendations.

How to repair an acrylic bathtub at home

If used improperly, cracks or chips may appear on the surface of acrylic bathtubs. Knowing the intricacies of the repair, you can correct the defects yourself at home, thus saving a significant amount on calling the repair service.

Damage to the surface of the acrylic bath can be of a mechanical or chemical type. In the first case, chips may appear due to careless use, in particular, upon impact and in the event of a fall of heavy or sharp objects such as a bottle of eau de toilette or a razor.

Scratches may also appear as a result of wear and tear of the product over many years of use. As for chemical damage, they can be the result of improper bathroom care - the use of abrasives, etc.

The method of repairing an acrylic product directly depends on how serious the damage is. If the chips and scratches are insignificant, then the problem is solved by polishing, but in case of surface breakdowns, deep chips and through cracks, one cannot do without pouring liquid acrylic.

What is Liquid Acrylic (Styracryl)?

A separate type of acrylic called styracryl is specially designed to repair damage to acrylic products, both locally and completely. The material consists of an acrylic base (the required color is introduced into it), as well as a hardener. In the process of mixing the two components, the substances polymerize, the acrylic gradually hardens, forming a high-strength enamel layer.

Due to the fact that styracryl has a high fluidity, it is distributed over the treated surface in a fairly evenly smooth layer. In addition, the material hardens gradually - delayed hardening allows you to make repairs at home without haste. At the same time, the polymerization time can be easily adjusted by adding a larger amount of hardener to the composition.

Required materials and tools

There are quite a lot of special repair kits in hardware stores today. Before buying suitable materials and tools, you need to determine the type of damage, as well as take into account the color of a particular bath.

In order to repair acrylic bathtubs at home, you will need:

  • polishing disc;
  • bath polishing paste;
  • sandpaper with a grain size from 800 to 2000;
  • soft spatula;
  • bulk acrylic;
  • drill with drill 0.5–1 mm;
  • alcohol or solvent;
  • gloves, respirator.

Repair sequence when working with liquid acrylic

Before carrying out repair work, the drain-overflow is dismantled, a plug or a cardboard funnel is placed in the drain hole, which will not come into contact with the bath surface. The next step is to clean the surface from the top layer of enamel, remove dust, degrease and apply a layer of liquid acrylic itself. In this case, the mixture is always kneaded according to the recommendations of the manufacturer.

Advice. When mixing the mixture for applying liquid acrylic, you can use the container in which the hardener was located, simply by carefully cutting off its top.

After applying acrylic, wait for it to dry, after which the surface is polished. Upon completion of all the listed works, the restoration is considered complete. The bathroom can be used until new damage appears during a long service life, which reaches 15 to 25 years.

Removal of minor scratches and chips

  1. With the help of 800-grit sandpaper, polishing is carefully carried out only in the area of the chip.
  2. The problem area is polished several times with paper with a lighter grain up to 2000 grit.
  3. The place of scratches or chips is carefully processed with polish (you can use a drill bit).

Deep damage restoration

  1. An 800-grit sandpaper is used to process the area around a deep chip or hole.
  2. Grinding continues, the grain gradually decreases up to 2000.
  3. The area to be treated is rinsed with a soap solution.
  4. After drying, treatment with alcohol is carried out.
  5. According to the instructions from the manufacturer, the components of the mixture of liquid acrylic are mixed.
  6. With the help of a rubber spatula, a chip or a hole is sealed in a level with an old layer of acrylic so that there are no bumps.
  7. When the acrylic is completely dry, the final polishing is carried out.

Repair of through cracks

  1. By drilling, holes are made at both ends of the crack beams to prevent further crack propagation.
  2. Sand the area along the crack and in the area of the holes made using 800-grit paper.
  3. Grinding continues until the grain is reduced up to 2000.
  4. Washing is performed with soapy water.
  5. After drying, the problem area is treated with an alcohol-containing substance.
  6. Hardener and liquid acrylic are mixed.
  7. The crack is repaired using a rubber trowel.
  8. The surface is polished after the acrylic layer has dried.

What to do if the acrylic layer has moved away from the fiberglass

It is often seen around the crack that the layers of acrylic have come off on both sides and "play". Most often, the problem arises for those who independently installed the bathtub, without observing the elementary installation rules. It is the distortions that cause the appearance of cracks, the edges of which move away from the fiberglass layer.

You can correct the situation with a special glue designed for gluing acrylic with a layer of fiberglass. It is necessary to drill a small hole in the peel area and pour glue into it. When the layers are seized, you can directly proceed to the very repair of the crack according to the algorithm given above.

Conclusion

The process of repairing a bathtub made of acrylic is simple and it is quite possible to cope with it yourself. In general, the restoration process takes no more than 2 hours, even with the most serious surface damage, while there is no need to purchase new expensive plumbing fixtures.

Repair of acrylic bathtubs at home - sealing chips and cracks

Recently, expensive and massive cast iron or rapidly cooling and noisy steel bathtubs have been replaced by light, modern models made of acrylic. They perfectly retain heat, boast a wide range of sizes, a variety of colors and shapes.

Repair of acrylic bathtubs at home - how to restore pristine whiteness

Acrylic bathtubs have long been a leader in the domestic market, since they are affordable, presented in a wide variety of shapes and colors, are easy to install and unpretentious in operation. However, even the highest quality product can crack. It is not at all necessary to part with it right away, repairing an acrylic bathtub at home is quite possible.

Polymer bathtubs enjoy well-deserved popularity not only due to the fact that they are able to embody any design fantasy. They are light, for a long time, like cast iron, they keep the temperature of the water. This is convenient if you are using a boiler for an apartment, it will help you save on utility bills. They are pleasant to the touch and beautiful - snow-white or colored gloss always looks very advantageous.

Stylish and comfortable acrylic bathtub

Of course, a lot depends on the quality of the product itself. Acrylic can be of different thicknesses, the composition of the polymer may vary slightly. Cast acrylic is considered the strongest and most durable, but such bathtubs are more expensive. It is clear that, no matter how much the purchase costs, you will have to take care of the bathroom in any case, preferably from the first days. To avoid big and small troubles, it is better to do it right. Otherwise, the color will fade, the gloss will be replaced by an unattractive cobweb of small flaws. But the restoration of an acrylic bathtub will become difficult. Let's start with what you definitely shouldn't do:

  • wash heavy objects with sharp corners or surfaces that can scratch acrylic in the bath,
  • wash animals whose claws will inevitably leave marks,
  • drop heavy objects,
  • pouring out coloring agents, for example, hair dye; it is undesirable for the means for fixing the hairstyle - varnishes and mousses to fall on the surface,
  • clean a dry bath, especially with hard sponges and brushes.

What products should not be used to wash an acrylic bath:

  • containing abrasive substances,
  • "Hard" chemical preparations containing ammonia, other industrial alcohols, acetone, acids and alkalis, formaldehydes.

How, then, to wash the bathtub? It is best to use soft cloths or sponges with a special or mild detergent. For example, you can use a common dishwashing detergent that dissolves grease and dirt well. It is better to apply the product for 5-10 minutes, letting it act, and then you can simply rinse it off with running water. Particularly soiled areas can be rubbed with the same cloth.

If rust has formed near the drain or under the tap, you can remove it by dampening a cloth with regular vinegar or lemon juice. These products, by the way, are good at eliminating unpleasant odors, which is also important for bathrooms. Timely cleaning of the sewage system will also affect the state of the bathroom.

In fact, these bathtubs are as practical to use as cast iron or steel, do not be intimidated. And yet the troubles that can occur are worth knowing by sight. This will save you the time and money it takes to fix them. Traditionally, damage is divided into two groups:

  • mechanical origin.
  • as a result of chemical exposure.

Deep damage to the surface of the bath

Chemical "burns" are caused by improper care and use. Ugly marks on a snow-white surface can leave not only dyes and caustic substances, but also low-quality washing powders or bleaches, if you decide to soak laundry in them right in the bath.

Mechanical damage is much more common. The most common defect can be minor scratches. But deep damage to the surface layer, cracks of various sizes and even through holes also occur. But even a hole of about 100x100 mm can be safely repaired by yourself, without having much experience in this type of repair. This is the main advantage of acrylic bathtubs, because it is much more difficult to restore enamel on metal cases, and it is almost impossible to imagine repairing a hole in a steel bathtub.

Before heading to the store, do a good job of researching the problem you are about to fix. For each case, you will need its own repair kit, why spend too much or run after the missing several times?

Special formulations for the restoration of the bath surface

The main thing is to know exactly how your bathtub is made. Most often there are two types on sale:

  • vacuum or injection molding,
  • extruded with a thin spray.

It's pretty simple to define. If the new product was protected by a special film, and on the edge cut the acrylic layer (it differs in color and density) reaches several millimeters, you have a bathtub made using vacuum technology. In this case, the repair will require liquid acrylic made from PMMA.

The extruded coating is not protected with a film, and on the cut it will be seen that the layer is very thin, up to one millimeter. The repair kit is often sold together with these bathtubs, but if not, you need to buy a polyester resin cleaner. Give preference to quality products from trusted manufacturers. These will have high adhesion and repair will be like clockwork. Otherwise, the acrylic applied to the repair site will peel off pretty soon.

By the way, for small scratches or subtle chips, you only need sandpaper and felt for polishing. You just need to mechanically wipe them and restore the gloss again.

For deeper scratches, it is enough to purchase

... In the case of a major repair of cracks in an acrylic bathtub, you will need:

  • suitable acrylic of the right shade,
  • a special degreaser for treating the damaged area.
  • sandpaper of different numbers.
  • acrylic hardener (without it, you cannot make repairs).
  • polishing paper for finishing the repair site or grinding wheel for an electric drill with a special paste.

Ideally, it is better to purchase a set of materials for repairs from the same manufacturer that made the bath itself. This will make it easier to get into the desired acrylic shade.

Pay attention to your own safety. The polymer is often sold as a powder and dilution liquid. To protect your eyes and respiratory tract, use a respirator and plastic goggles. Hands will be protected by rubber gloves. Provide room ventilation.

Small defects in the surface layer appear as a result of careless use. For example, from a regularly falling shower head. It happens that unattractive cigarette stains remain inside the bathtub over time. Eliminating such troubles, as a rule, is not difficult:

  1. 1. Take a few numbers of sandpaper.
  2. 2. Start sanding the damaged area with the coarsest emery cloth, trying to level the surface.
  3. 3. Move to smaller numbers.
  4. 4. Having eliminated the defect, polish the place of repair with felt or a grinding wheel using grinding mastic.
  5. 5. Wash the bath and you can safely use it.

Bath restoration with special compounds

This method works for both shallow scratches and chemical damage to the bath. But a large, well-visible chip is eliminated differently, using acrylic:

  1. 1. The place is sanded as described above.
  2. 2. Then washed with soap and left to dry completely.
  3. 3. It is processed with a degreaser.
  4. 4. Acrylic diluted according to the instructions should be applied with a rubber spatula (usually included). Level the surface, eliminate the chip.
  5. 5. Make sure that the patch does not form a bump, it will be difficult to remove it.
  6. 6. After drying, polish the repaired area with felt or a polishing wheel with mastic.

Cracks are also mechanical damage, and the stronger the impact, the more significant the damage. At the same time, they have an unpleasant feature - to grow and let water pass. So if you notice even a small crack, it is best to stop using the bathroom before fixing it. The load - more than one hundred kilograms of water, plus your weight, can lead to irreversible consequences. Repair will not take much time, but then the bathroom can be safely used for many years.

  1. 1.Using a drill and a thin drill, we expand the crack to one or two millimeters and deepen it to half a millimeter. Otherwise, even after the repair, she will do it herself, without our participation, under the influence of the load.
  2. 2. Grind the crack and the place around it with sandpaper, going from coarser to finest.
  3. 3. We treat the place of repair with soap, wash it off, let it dry.
  4. 4. Next, we repeat all the stages of chip repair:
  • degrease
  • dilute acrylic according to the instructions (usually 50 parts of acrylic and 1 part of hardener),
  • apply with a rubber spatula, observing the surface geometry. There should be no bump, but leave some stock of material for subsequent grinding, otherwise there will be a dent,
  • leave for about 6-12 hours to dry. You can cover the place with polyethylene, protecting it from dust and debris,
  • polish.

Serious scratch on the bottom of the acrylic bathtub

After you have managed to update the bath with acrylic, you can use it in a day. By the way, high-quality grinding at the first stage provides not only optimal adhesion of the surface of the renovated bathtub to the patch, but also avoids loss of whiteness at the place of repair.

Some experts recommend airbrushing the acrylic, citing the fact that it makes the layer smoother. But for the sake of a one-time repair, it makes no sense to buy expensive equipment. With a rubber spatula, with a certain amount of effort, you can achieve not the worst effect.

Another point, if the bathtub is of poor quality or is installed incorrectly - with distortions and the formation of cracks, then acrylic peeling may begin around the crack. Then you need to buy special glue, drill the exfoliated area, pour glue into the hole and fix it. Once dry, repairs can be carried out as usual by taking in the glue hole as well.

We have already said above, at home and on your own, you can even close up a through hole in the bathroom 100x100 mm in size. How it was formed, we will leave it on the conscience of the owners, but it should be eliminated like this:

  1. 1. We buy enough acrylic.
  2. 2. We clean the place of repair with sandpaper, moving from coarse to fine.
  3. 3. With my soap, removing fine dust, let it dry.
  4. 4. Degrease.
  5. 5. We dilute acrylic in the required amount - one layer will require about 50 milliliters. There is no need to do the surplus, they will have to be thrown away.
  6. 6. Close the hole with fiberglass and carefully, without haste, saturate with acrylic on both sides with a brush or spatula, going into intact areas.
  7. 7. Leave to dry for several hours, protect with cellophane.
  8. 8. Repeat the process of creating the patch at least two more times.
  9. 9. Be sure to let each layer dry well.
  10. 10. Grind the place of repair with a grinding wheel with mastic.

Of course, there is a risk that, doing this for the first time, you will not be able to achieve ideal coverage and the update will be noticeable. But it’s better than buying a new bathtub, especially if this one hasn’t been used for that long.

Acrylic bath repair at home with your own hands

With proper care, the acrylic bowl will last dozens of years, but sooner or later the coating still loses glossiness and whiteness. You can perform the repair of an acrylic bath with your own hands, it is enough to know about different ways to restore the gloss, their real efficacy and techniques of work. About everything in order.

How to repair damage to the case

Acrylic baths have extremely low resistance to mechanical damage. If the need for repair is caused by damage to the bowl from a randomly obnted object, the integrity of the base should be restored before restoring the coating. Note that the actions described below are necessary only if the fiberglass layer is damaged, there are chips or bundles. If the basis has kept integrity, you can use the usual Repair Kit.

So, first of all, remove all the broken fragments and thoroughly inspect the edges of the opening. You need to make sure that stratified flakes were not formed at the edges. Otherwise, it may be necessary to remove detachable layers, tear the fragments better from the outside.

For the repairs of the base, a glasswater is required by a density of 200 g / m 2. If you are not sure about the presence of impregnations between the glass fibers, the flaps of the glassmate are better lit into the flame of the gas burner. The binder is a two-component epoxy glue, there will be enough budget EDP.

The essence of the repair is to apply 5-7 layers of fiberglass on a cleaned and degreased surface around the breakdown seat. At first, the glue is applied to the edge of the opening with an indent 3-4 cm, then the flap of the glassmate is stacked and carefully smoothes, the size of which is more holes for 2-3 cm in each direction.

Each subsequent wolk passes after partial polymerization of the resin in the previous layer. To accelerate the process, it is recommended to increase the concentration of the hardener 2-2.5 times, so the break between the laying of the lat assessment will be about 15-20 minutes. The dimensions of each subsequent patch must be 3-4 cm more than the previous one. For further work, the bath will be ready after the complete polymerization of the resin, that is, the next day. Before the restoration of the coating, the breakdown seat is aligned with the composition of the standard acrylic repair kit and polished flush with the overall surface.

Is simple painting possible

There are only two options to restore the shine and whiteness of the acrylic coating. The easiest - epoxy paint of aerosol type with a margin of Ceramics. This method is quite eligible for life, especially given the high cost of the bulk acrylic and the complexity of its application.

The main disadvantage of painting in the inability of the thin layer hide surface defects. The bath will have to shook long and tediously, gradually increasing the grain index and removing large scratches and chips. Naturally, this should allow the thickness of the acrylic layer - cheap baths have a polymer coating of about 0.5-0.7 mm and to restore their painting, most likely will not work.

Otherwise, everything is simple: the entire surface is cleaned for removing the gloss, then acetone is wiping for degreasing. Next, paint deposition is carried out from a distance of 40-45 cm with one or two thin layers at an interval of 20-30 minutes. When spraying, it is impossible to form the formation of flots, if nevertheless appeared - they need to get into the pure foam sponge and paint again. It is necessary to work solely in the respirator and eliminate the occurrence of an open flame in the room.

One aerosol can is enough for 1.8–2 m 2 of surface.

Sanding ends with a 600 grit treatment, after this treatment the coating acquires a matte whiteness and is practically devoid of defects. At each increase in grain size, the bath must be flushed with water, getting rid of larger abrasive particles.

No matter how hard you try, you will not get a perfectly smooth finish with factory quality. To improve the result, you can lightly spray the still fresh polymer with a gas burner flame immediately after all the acrylic has been poured onto the surface. Rapid heating helps to get rid of the trapped gas residues and smooth the surface as efficiently as possible.

After drying, the bathtub will still need polishing, but not so time consuming. The polishing paste should be applied in small portions and rubbed over the surface with a fiber cloth. Polishing is carried out with wide circular motions; periodically, you need to add a fresh portion of the paste to the napkin.

As you can see, repairing an acrylic bathtub is not an easy undertaking, but it is definitely easier and cheaper than installing a new bowl or liner.

Acrylic baths are preferred today by many for their variety, aesthetic appearance, affordable cost, light weight and a host of other advantages. They appeared on the Russian market at the end of the last century and today they have firmly occupied their niche in it, having acquired an army of thousands of admirers. Acrylic is reliable and environmentally friendly, retains water temperature for a long time, baths made of it are easy to clean, varied in style, shape and color. Even for a cramped bathroom, it is not difficult to choose an acrylic bathtub, convenient and comfortable for bathing and other hygienic procedures.

But the bath, like any plumbing, is used intensively every day, and no matter how carefully we treat it, it does not go unnoticed. Gradually, the appearance of an acrylic bathtub deteriorates and loses its presentability. Spots and chips appear on its surface, the coating darkens, cracks form, which increase over time, and with them the risks of creating a favorable environment for the reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms that are dangerous to human health grow.

What can be done in such a situation to return the acrylic bathtub to its former attractiveness and functionality? There are three possible solutions to the problem:

  • dismantle the old bathtub and buy a new one;

  • invite specialists to eliminate defects;

  • purchase a suitable repair kit and repair it yourself.

Replacing plumbing is expensive. It is necessary to purchase and deliver a bathtub, dismantle the old equipment, and install the new one. All this will cost you a pretty penny, and even require time for all these actions. The second option - with the invitation of professional repairmen - will require lower costs (but still considerable), besides there is no guarantee that you will not run into an unscrupulous or insufficiently qualified and experienced master.

If you are not satisfied with the options for solving the problem by replacing the bath or professional restoration of the coating, then you can restore the worn out acrylic plumbing yourself using the repair kits offered by the market.

What damage and why occurs

It is necessary to classify them to select a repair technology. All the reasons for the violation of the integrity of the upper layer of the surface of acrylic bathtubs by nature can be divided into two large groups - mechanical and chemical. The former is caused by the careless operation of the bath. They can be applied by dropping any heavy or sharp object, especially metal, into the bowl, or by hand washing regularly in a basin at the bottom of the bath. Regular bathing of a dog or cat does not pass without a trace. All these actions entail the formation of chips and cracks, the appearance of scratches, deep and not very. Intensive use can thin the top layer, the network of small cracks that appears on it will begin to grow. This also includes the illiterate use of cleaning agents, the use of formulations with abrasive particles.

Chemical damage occurs when the acrylic surface comes into contact with aggressive substances. They can be improperly selected cleaning agents, stain removers, or even active laundry detergents if you soak your laundry with them in the bathtub. It happens that a chemically aggressive liquid is accidentally spilled onto an acrylic surface. Chemical damage is manifested by a change in the color of the coating, the appearance of stains, peeling of acrylic, burn-through, in the worst case, through.

What materials to use for repair

When self-restoring an acrylic bathtub, the correct choice of repair materials is very important. If we apply for this substances that are outwardly similar to acrylic, but differ in technical characteristics and operational properties from the material for making the bath, then all efforts will be unsuccessful. Very quickly repaired defects will reappear, cracks will grow, new coating will peel off from chips.

The main factor that dictates the choice of material for restoration work on the surface of an acrylic bath is the technology of its production. Manufacturers of this type of plumbing use two technologies:

  • vacuum forming from acrylic sheet;

  • spraying acrylic coating on a base made of abs-plastic.

Determining how your bathtub was made is very simple. If at the time of purchase it was tightened into a protective film packaging, it means that it was made by molding. If there was no plastic protective film, then you are dealing with plumbing with acrylic coating. If you didn’t buy the bathtub, then you can use another method of determining the technology of its manufacture. To do this, carefully examine the cut of the side, especially the white top layer. If its thickness is 5-6 mm, this indicates that the bathtub is molded from acrylic sheet. If the layer of white coating does not exceed 2 mm, your bathtub is made of abs plastic. After clarifying these technological features, you can take care of the materials for the restoration. For a molded bath, you need to buy liquid acrylic; for a sprayed bath, you need to use a special repair kit, which can often be attached to a sanitary product when sold.

Removing scratches from an acrylic bathtub

Getting rid of scratches is easy. This is a minor defect, usually scratches on the acrylic surface are shallow and easy to repair. First of all, the area with a scratch must be sanded. Prepare two types of sandpaper - coarse-grained and fine-grained. First use a coarse skin for processing, then a fine-grained one. After sanding, the surface to be repaired should be degreased using a ready-made compound or, for example, just alcohol. After degreasing, a polish for working with acrylic is applied to the treated area and left to dry. If the length of the scratch is minimal - just a few millimeters - you can seal it up with epoxy glue.

We offer another method for removing scratches, which is especially good for their considerable length. In this case, use a special tape. Before using it, the area with a scratch is thoroughly degreased, after which a repair tape is glued along the defect, removing the protective layer from it. It is important to position it so that on both sides of the scratch it occupies an adjacent area at least 1 cm wide. When gluing the repair tape, proceed carefully, slowly, to ensure that no air bubbles remain under it. The area repaired with tape will dry out for at least three hours, this entire period must be protected from moisture.

Remember to repair any scratches that appear, including the smallest and most insignificant. Otherwise, they will increase over time, and it will take much more effort, time and restorative material to eliminate them.

Restoration of cracks on an acrylic surface

The most common cause of acrylic bath cracks is accidental dropping of a heavy object. If this trouble happened to you, it's time to buy a repair kit or repair tape. A crack is a serious defect, therefore, it will take longer to restore it than to remove scratches. Repair the crack in the acrylic as follows:

  • Sand the surface with two types of sandpaper in the same way as when restoring scratches.

  • At the ends of the crack, carefully drill small holes 1 mm in diameter, as if artificially enlarging the crack. This is necessary in order to prevent further crack growth, which without this simple action is guaranteed even with gentle use.

  • Rinse the area to be restored by removing any solid particles and dust remaining from the drilling from the acrylic surface, then let the bath dry well.

  • Degrease the work area with alcohol or another solution of the same effect.

  • Apply acrylic bath repair kit to the crack. It consists of two components that are connected right before use. When a crack is deep, it is often necessary to apply acrylic in several passes. After applying each layer, it is allowed to harden, pausing for 3-4 hours in the restoration work.

  • After the crack has been completely sealed, the bath should be allowed to dry for several hours. While the acrylic applied to the crack is drying, the bathroom cannot be used: it is forbidden to pour water into the bowl, press on the repaired surface, checking the degree of drying.

  • After the final drying of the new acrylic coating, it remains only to carefully process the crack with a fine-grained sandpaper and polish the restored area.

If you have chosen a restoration with tape, then use it in the same way as when restoring a scratched surface. But keep in mind that only cracks that are not very long and not too deep can be repaired with the restoration tape. After installing the tape patch, it is necessary not to use the bathroom at all for several hours, protecting the new coating from contact with moisture.

We repair chips

Chips on an acrylic bath are not uncommon. They are formed as a result of careless operation, accidental blows with massive metal objects, etc. The choice of repair method depends on the size of the chip.

If it is minimal, try simple polishing to fix the surface restoration problem. Before performing it, the chip must be rubbed with a coarse-grained sandpaper, and then polished with fine-grained sandpaper. The work can be accelerated by using a drill equipped with a polishing attachment. After finishing polishing, remove dust and wash the restored area with soapy water.

bath4.png

Abrasive paper ABRAforce, fabric 100mm x 5m, (P60), art.500024839

If the size of the chip is significant, then again you cannot do without a repair kit. When restoring chips, you need to act in the same way as when eliminating cracks. First, the working area is cleaned with an emery cloth of different grain sizes, after which the place of the chip is washed and degreased. Then follow all the same steps as when repairing cracks. Liquid acrylic should be applied gently and just enough to level the surface. The excess of the applied restoration material must be removed immediately, avoiding the formation of a tubercle at the site of the chip. The restored bath should be dried for 6-12 hours, depending on the temperature and humidity in the room, after which the working area is polished and washed off with water.

How to deal with peeling acrylic

If your bathtub is made of acrylic-coated abs plastic, then when a crack forms, another problem often arises - delamination of the coating. It is easy to spot as the edges of the crack heave up and detach from the plastic base. The reason for the peeling of acrylic, as a rule, lies in the mistakes made during the installation of plumbing. Detachment usually occurs if during installation there was no proper control of the horizontal level of the bath, the skewing of the bowl leads to such negative consequences. But the separation of acrylic can be eliminated on your own without resorting to professional help.

If the area of the acrylic delamination site is insignificant, then a special glue for acrylic and fiberglass, which can be purchased at a household goods store, will help to cope with the problem. Use it in accordance with the attached instructions. If the area requiring restoration is extensive, then stock up on a fiberglass repair kit and a drill. You need to follow these steps:

  • sand the crack with sandpaper;

  • drill small holes in the delaminated areas;

  • pour glue or liquid acrylic included in the repair kit through the prepared holes;

  • wait until the layers of acrylic stick together. This usually takes several hours;

  • further repair the damage in the same way as an ordinary crack.

Acrylic bathtubs are reliable modern plumbing fixtures that, with careful use, will last for many years. Their appearance depends on the degree of intensity of operation, on regular and competent care. But even if the appearance of the product deteriorates and damage appears, do not lose heart - acrylic bathtubs are distinguished by good maintainability, they can always return a presentable look, spending a small amount from the family budget and a few hours of your own time on it.
